I was born in Saint Petersburg, Russia and immigrated to the United States with my parents in 2003. I grew up on the East Coast, but spent my summers in a small town called Severodvinsk in northern Russia.
I am a painter, printmaker, collager and constant experimenter, currently living and making work in Brooklyn, New York.
I draw inspiration from Russian history and the ways it has affected its citizens, both past and present. I drew my first inspiration from my grandmother’s story. Born in 1941, she lived through Stalin’s death, the break-up of the Soviet Union, and the rise of Putin. She worked as an engineer, while also filling the role of wife, mother, and eventually grandmother. However, my work has since expanded to include the lives of many others.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine was a turning point in my perception of the world and my work. Politics, history, and war have become a much more tangible part of daily life. My recent paintings address the ways in which we live in times that are uncertain and at times unbearable, the Russian propaganda machine, and the ways in which we find temporary solace.
